Alex's research is broadly concerned with the impacts of scientific knowledge on organizations, institutions, and individuals. His dissertation examines how social scientists' discovery of unemployment as a macro-structural phenomenon changed the relationships between individuals, economic institutions, and the state. He is also engaged in an ongoing project on the environmental and social impacts of "technified" coffee production, particularly in Latin America.
